Connecticut's civil rights issue of our time: textured hair?

On Monday, Governor Ned Lamont signed into law a bill requiring hair sylists to undergo training on textured hair.

The new law takes effect on July 1. The bill received support from several advocates and the Commission on Human Rights and Opportunities, who said access to equitable hair care is a civil rights issue.  The bill builds on the CT CROWN Act signed by the governor in March 2021. The name CROWN stands for “Creating a Respectful and Open World for Natural Hair”.

According to State Senator Patricia Billie Miller, Democrat from Stamford, "It's about social justice, it's about inclusivity, it's about making sure there is equity."

Between the lines: It's about another of many mandates from Hartford.
