Last week the Greenwich Historic District Commission weighed in on the proposed George H.W. Bush statue with illuminated fountain at the corner of Greenwich Ave and Arch Street in front of the WWI obelisk. They voted unanimously against it.
Most questioned its location. Why not in front of the senior center at 299 Greenwich Avenue or in front of the WWII/Korea and Vietnam Monument in front of the Havemeyer building? How about sitting on a bench looking back at the WWI monument with lighting on the obelisk?
Based on that decision, First Selectman Camillo said plans are now off the table to put the statue in that location. Former President George H.W. Bush grew up in Greenwich, attended Greenwich Country Day School and met his future wife Barbara Pierce in Greenwich. Camillo said that Bush is an American hero and believes the Town should honor him with a statue and fountain in some other location.
Between the Lines: Other locations will be explored, preferably elsewhere downtown. He ruled out putting the statue at Town Hall.
