Moderator of the RTM says the body skews center-left and ordinances are on the rise

At the June 26 meeting of the Retired Mens Association (RMA), Alexis Voulgaris, moderator of the 230-member Representative Town Meeting (RTM), discussed the history of the body, her goals for the next two years, and answered questions from the audience.

Alexis was elected to serve as the seventh Moderator of the Greenwich RTM in January 2022, and reelected in 2024. She is the first woman to hold this position in the ninety-one- year history of the organization. Alexis has served on the RTM since 2005. She represents District 6, Old Greenwich.

It is a big body: The 230-member Greenwich RTM is the third largest legislative body in the. U.S. after Congress (535 members), and New Hampshire (424 members).

It is political: While the RTM is non-partisan (members and committee chairs are not affiliated with, or sponsored by, a political party), the RTM has always been political and has become more political in recent years. According to Alexis, in 2018 the RTM lurched to the left, then the RTM lurched to the right and now the RTM skews center left.

Rise in ordinances: There has been a rise in the number of ordinances put forward to the RTM e.g. 2018 plastic bag ban, 2018 fracking ban (?), 2024 gas powered leaf blower ban. Coming up will be an ordinance to ban traveling circuses.
