Medal winners at the 2024 Paris Olympics will take home a unique medal. The medals are inlaid with a piece of the Eiffel Tower in a hectagonal shape representing the shape of France, often referred to as the L'Hexagone. Around the iron pieces are discs of gold, silver or bronze that are crinkled to reflect light, making the medals shine.
The Paris Mint is manufacturing 5,084 medals.
In the 2008 Beijing Olympics, the medals had inlaid jade disks.
Between the lines: The gold medal contains 6 grams of gold worth $462 at today's spot price. The silver medal has 525 grams of silver worth $494. While it may be a disappointment to come in second, athletes can take consolation that the silver medal is worth more than the gold.
