Concerns about community buy-in for a plan to "flip" a new ice rink next to the old one in Byram resulted in a new rink task force assembled on March 12. This new nine-member committee will look at options such as building a new rink in a new location (e.g. Island Beach Parking Lot), rebuilding the rink in the existing location while operating in a temporary location, or further studying the "flip".
Replacing another committee that spent almost 5 years on this project, the new committee members are: Matt DesChamps, Chair (D, D6, BET member), Katharine Ashworth, Vice Chair (D, D1, RTM member), Steph Cowie, Secretary (R, D11, RTM member; ADA Committee; CMS Building Committee), Javier Aleman (D, D4; EMAC member), Michael Armstrong (R, D9, Byram Veterans Association), Megan Cutler (D, D4, BNA member), Ed Fuss (not a registered resident; from Byram and a rink construction expert), Dan Izzo (U, D6, RTM member) and Christina Schwefel (U, D11). Meetings are expected to be held weekly on Wednesdays at 5 pm and some will be accessible by Zoom.
Currently $24 million is in the 2027-2028 budget for the rink. The original $1.2 million allocated for design work was reduced to $50,000 as a result of this delay. The goal is to work quickly to get the $1.2 million back in the budget and not disturb the $24 million 2027-2028 allocation.
Between the Lines: Slowly, but surely, the ice rink cometh.
