On Friday, the Greenwich Department of Public Works announced that the North Street Bridge construction project originally scheduled to start this Spring/Summer will now start in the Spring of 2026. While the final project design was approved by the State (a critical milestone in the process), the Town is still waiting for formal authorization to initiate the bidding phase.

The North Street bridge crosses West Brothers Brook between Cotswood Road and Macpherson Drive. It was built in 1909 and rebuilt in 1950. With 7,000 vehicles per day, it is one of the most heavily traveled bridges in Greenwich located near many schools.

The good news is that the work will not overlap with the upcoming Route One at Hillside Bridge repair project in Byram. The estimated project cost for the North Street Bridge is $3 million of which significant funding will come from the State, except for the extra bonus that was factored in by the town to finish early. Perhaps there is now time to provide residents a set of construction drawings to fully understand the impact of the redesigned bridge and related flooding.

Between the Lines - In order to shorten the project timeline, there is expected to be a full road closure during the summer of 2026. Get ready for slow driving next summer. Nantucket anyone?
