Transit Oriented Development just another mandate to urbanize

Updated: May 10

They call it House Bill 5390 (HB5390), Transit Oriented Communities (TOC), Transit Oriented Developments (TOD), Walkable Communities (Work, Live, Ride), allowing more apartments near train and bus stations, etc. We call it the end of single family homes and open space as we know it. These bills are gifts to developers enabling them to avoid local zoning oversight.

Passed in the House with close vote. On May 3, HB5390, the Transit-Oriented Communities (TOD) bills, passed the Connecticut House with a vote of 89 to 62. A handful of Democrats voted alongside Republicans against the measure.

Greenwich Democrat representatives vote in favor. You might expect our Representatives from Greenwich (where we value local zoning, open space, trees, sustainablility, etc.) to have joined the handful of Democrates that voted against this. But no, the bill had the full support of our Greenwich Democratic House delegation including Representatives Rachel Khanna (149 District), Steve Meskers (150 District), and Hector Arzeno (151 District). They say here that they had good reasons, but they broke their promise to protect local control.

Let's hope this gets de-"railed" when it appears before the CT Senate where our Republican Representative Ryan Fazio (36th District) might help stop the madness.
