In one of his first official acts, President Donald Trump pardoned more than 1,500 January 6 protestors, including eleven Connecticut residents. Of those pardoned, two brothers - Thomas and Michael Kenny - were from Greenwich.
On January 6, 2021, the brothers entered the U.S. Capitol building through the Upper West Terrace door, they walked in a circle around the rotunda before exiting the building after about 30 minutes. For doing this they were arrested in December 2023 and charged with the crime of "disorderly conduct in a capitol building or grounds; and parading, demonstrating, or picketing in a capitol building."
The brothers pleaded guilty and were awaiting sentencing of up to six months of imprisonment and a fine of up to $5,000.
The investigation of the January 6 protestors was the largest investigation in U.S. Department of Justice history.
Between the lines: Trump was elected with the promise that he would pardon the January 6 protestors claiming that the prosecutions were politically motivated and a miscarriage of justice.
