Why is the high school pool suddenly out of compliance?

A report by TLB Architects (TLBA) recommended that the Greenwich High School pool be shut down for 1-2 years to remedy building code violations. Here are the violations:

Diving Board: The height of the ceiling beam above the diving board is too low. If a student springs up high on the diving board they can reach the beam.

Drains: Drains are out of compliance with current code that requires preventing suction risk

Narrow pool deck: Spectators share deck space with athletes, making the deck unsanitary

Filtration system: The filtration system is old and improperly runs through a brook, violating environmental regulations

At a meeting of the Board of Education last week, aquatics parents and coaches asked why is this coming up now? Long time swim coach Terry Lowe said, "I’ve literally spent decades of my life in the GHS pool. Unfortunately the report being presented tonight was made without anyone speaking to me or any swimming, diving or water polo coach or teacher. After more than five decades of service I would like to think that my experience and expertise has some value in these discussions.”

Between the "Lane" Lines:  The overhead beam above the diving board was found to have initials written on it that could only have been placed there if the diver sprung high off the board and hung long enough on the beam to write on it.
