Connecticut's sales tax free week runs from August 18 to 24 and politicians are reminding us what a great benefit they have bestowed on us. But, as every year goes by, we get less and less excited. Here's why:
This program was instituted 24 years ago in 2000 and it applies to saving the sales tax (6.35%) on purchases of up to $100 of clothing and shoes. Over the last 24 years, due to inflation, the purchasing power of $100 is now $54 worth of goods. That does not cover much.
With inflation, as every year goes by, the value of that $100 declines further.
Between the lines: Will our politicians stop crowing about this program of diminishing value and work for real relief by removing the hidden taxes on our energy bills and permanently reducing our many other taxes. No more scams.
